About Us
Representing over 800 individual members, the West Virginia State Council for the Society for Human Resource Management (WV SHRM) is the state affiliate for the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). Founded in 1948, SHRM is the world’s largest association of human resource professionals. SHRM has more than 250,000 members and is considered the global voice of the human resource profession.
The WV SHRM State Council is a 100% volunteer organization with the primary objective of supporting SHRM’s initiatives throughout West Virginia, organizing and coordinating professional development opportunities, advancing the human resource profession, and serving as a conduit for communication among members of local SHRM chapters and at-large members (members of SHRM who are not affiliated with a local SHRM chapter).
West Virginia has seven local chapters affiliated with SHRM. The president of each local chapter also serves as a member of the WV SHRM State Council. The state is divided into two geographic districts with district directors who provide support to the chapters within their respective regions.
WV SHRM has seven standing committees that support SHRM’s core leadership initiatives throughout the state of West Virginia: SHRM Professional Credentialing (SHRM SCP, SHRM CP) HRCI Certification (SPHR), Diversity, Workforce Readiness, Government Affairs, Membership, College Relations, and SHRM Foundation. In addition, WV SHRM has standing committees that support other focus areas throughout the state: Professional Development, Technology, Volunteer Recruitment and Succession Planning, State Conference Planning Committee. The chair, or the director, of each state council standing committee sits as a member of the state council. When a local chapter has a committee that also represents the same core leadership or focus area, then the chair of the local chapter’s committee also sits on the state council standing committee. The state council’s standing committees also include other volunteers who are local chapter members and at-large members.
The State of West Virginia has five college chapters located at the following universities: Marshall University, West Virginia University, West Virginia University Tech, Fairmont University, and American Public University System. Each college chapter consists of members who are students at their respective universities. Each chapter has a faculty advisor. Professional chapters located near each college provide support to the student chapters.
In sum, the WV SHRM State Council is an entity of volunteers committed to advancing the human resource profession and developing the human resource professional.
